    This is James McCann of 1st Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers who died on 1st July 1916 at the battle of the Somme. According to a letter from a friend he was hit 3 or 4 times but the stomach wound he received was the fatal one. James was picked up by the stretcher bearers but died on the way to the dressing station.

    Great information, thanks for sharing it. Very sad also, seeing their faces on the slides, and hearing their stories. Imagine how his mother would have felt submitting photos for inclusion in the lantern slide show – one son alive and the other dead. Doesn’t bear thinking about. I wonder if she went to see the show…
