<image:title>58. James McCann - A Special Letter to Mary McCann</image:title>
<image:caption>David Morrow, relative of the McCann brothers got in touch with this heartbreaking letter to James McCann’s mother Mary. It was written by James’ friend James Magill who wrote to tell her how her son had died and to ensure she knew that he had received a proper burial. Magill had been wounded in France and the Belfast Telegraph had printed his photograph. We were then able to identify the man who wrote the letter in the lantern slides. James Magill survived the war. The McCann brothers and James Magill, indeed all of the Castleton Lanterns men were closley connected, brothers, best friends, pals and colleagues. It’s important to find their stories and tell them, to understand their lives and remember them. It is sad to hear the stories of those who were lost or wounded beside those who lived and flourished and I’m sure the families who gathered to watch the lantern slide show in 1918 must have felt something similar.</image:caption>

<image:caption>On 15 October 1914 HMS HAWKE, sailing with her sister ship THESEUS was torpedoed by German submarine U-9. The submarine’s first torpedo missed THESEUS but hit HAWKE igniting a magazine and causing a tremendous explosion which ripped much of the ship apart. HAWKE sank in a few minutes with the loss of her captain, 26 officers and 497 men including Samuel Fee, aged by now only 25 years old. Only 70 of her 594 crew survived. Over 20 men from Northern Ireland went down with their ship. Samuel’s service record notes “Lost in North Sea when HMS Hawke was sunk by a German submarine”. Samuel Fee is remembered on Chatham Naval Memorial.</image:caption>

      <image:title>4R. Samuel Fee - U-9</image:title>
<image:caption>U-9 was commanded by Kapitänleutnant Otto-Weddigen-Kaserne. Otto Weddigen was awarded the Iron Cross and, after sinking HMS HAWKE and some merchant ships, was awarded Prussia’s highest military order, the Pour le Mérite. He became one of only six non-Bavarians to receive the Knight’s Cross of the Military Order of Max Joseph, Bavaria’s highest military honour. He also received the highest military honours of the other two kingdoms of the German Empire, the Knight’s Cross of Saxony’s Military Order of St. Henry and the Knight’s Cross of Wurttemberg’s Military Merit Order. Wehrmacht named a newly built barracks in Herford as Otto-Weddigen-Kaserne in his honour due to the linkage with his birthplace. The naval connection was signified by placing two large anchors at the base of a large National Socialist Reichsadler at the entrance to the barracks. Ironically, ever since 1945 the barracks has been occupied by British Army soldiers from the Royal Corps of Signals.</image:caption>

<image:title>30R. Thomas Robinson - “My Grandmother, Mary Ann McGarvey’s handbag was always very heavy and no-one could work out why. After she died in 1967 my father checked her handbag and found some First World War medals with the name of Thomas Robinson on them. It transpired that she had been carrying these medals around in her handbag for fifty years and that Thomas Robinson was her younger brother who had died in the First World War. These medals lay in a drawer for several years until my daughter decided to try to find out what had happened to Thomas Robinson. She found out that he was born 18 May 1884 and served as a Sapper in the 150th Field Company Royal Engineers and that he married Edith Maguire, 44 Tennent St, Belfast at St Matthew’s Parish Church, Shankill Road, on 2 July 1917, only 3 days before returning to the Front. He died six weeks later at Langemarck on 16th August 1917 at the age of 32 and his name is remembered on the Tyne Cot Memorial in Belgium. Edith went on to marry Thomas’ cousin, John Craig and kept in touch with Mary Ann during her lifetime.”</image:title>

<image:title>30R. Thomas Robinson - My Poor Brave Boys</image:title>
<image:caption>The most famous Irish casualty of August 16th 1917 was Father Willie Doyle. Before he was killed, he wrote of those lost men shortly before he would join them, all of them asleep forever somewhere in Flanders fields. “My poor brave boys. They are lying now out on the battlefield: some in a little grave dug and blessed by their chaplain, who love them all as if they were his own children; others stiff and stark with staring eyes, hidden in a shell-hole where they had crept to die; while perhaps in some far-off thatched cabin an anxious mother sits listening for the well-known step and voice which will never gladden her heart again.”</image:caption>

<image:title>38R. John James Fulton - Memories of Grandpa John After Mountcollyer Street the family moved to 8 Rathdrum Street in Belfast where I lived with my grandma and grandad, my uncle Albert, my sister Hazel and my mother Winifred. Grandpa had qualified as a pharmacist during his time in the army but unfortunately at that time army qualifications were not accepted in civilian life so he had to work as a clerk. My hazy memories of him are of an extremely gentle man who loved books. Much to my grandma's frustration, he spent every spare penny going to Smithfield Market to buy second hand books. I particularly remember an amazing first edition copy of the Rubaiyat of Omar Kyahamm that he picked up for 2 and 6 that fascinated me as a child, as it had my mother before me. I think all of his children have passed on, but the next generation is flourishing.</image:title>

<image:caption>In 1883, Peter Kennedy was born in Ballymena to Francis and Jane Kennedy. He married the daughter of a sailor Sarah Jones in 1903 and the couple went in to have 5 children, Minnie, Frank, Isaac, Jane and Sarah. Peter was a member of Cavehill Temperance Orange Lodge as well as the Royal Black Preceptory. The second image of Peter in the lantern slides shows him wearing his sash. He was employed at the Workman Clarke Shipyard in Belfast, and had been in the Naval Reserve for 10 years when war broke out. When he was called up, he joined HMS Queen Mary were he remained until his death on 31 May 1916, at the Battle of Jutland. He drowned alongside his crewmates - 1265 men, of which 34 were fellow Irishmen. His widow Sarah was left to bring up their 5 children alone; the eldest was 11 years old and the youngest only 2. He is commemorated on Portsmouth Naval Memorial, in Harryville Presbyterian Church, as well as by Castleton.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Alexandra Presbyterian Church - Alexandra Presbyterian Church</image:title>
<image:caption>The community at Alexandra is made up of two congregations, that of York Street Presbyterian and Castleton Presbyterian. York Street Presbyterian Church was opened in 1839 and had a succession of ministers, including the Rev Thomas Hamilton, who became the first Vice Chancellor of Queen’s University and a member of the Privy Council of Ireland. This church’s history ended in it’s original location when it was destroyed in the Luftwaffe Blitz on Belfast in 1941. It was agreed that the congregations of York Street and Castleton should be united, to meet in the Castleton Building, the tower of which was also damaged during the war, and so Alexandra Presbyterian was born.</image:caption>

      <image:title>22. Henry McKnight - Henry McKnight</image:title>
<image:caption>Henry McKnight was a son of Samuel McKnight and Frances Spence who were married in Newington Parish Church in 1889. The couple went on to have a large family - by 1911 Frances had given birth to 16 children, though only 11 were still alive. She gave birth to child number 17 in 1913. Henry served with the 15th (North Belfast) Battalion, Royal Irish Rifles, later with the Machine Gun Corps. He was awarded the Military Medal for bravery in the field in 1916. We know that of the six McKnights on the Castleton Roll of Honour, five of them were brothers Henry, Samuel, Thomas, James and John. We believe that all of them survived the war. We are certain that we have identified Henry in the slides and we have made a tentative identification of Samuel.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Samuel McCall was born in Belfast in 1896 to foreman bricklayer William Alexander McCall and Elizabeth Kerr who were married in Ballygowan in 1892. In 1901, the family lived in Rhyll in Wales and by 1911 they had made their home on York Road, Belfast. Samuel was the only child, his two siblings having previously died. By 1916 the family were living in Gainsborough Drive, Belfast. Samuel worked as an advertising clerk with the Belfast Evening Telegraph and enlisted with the 14th Battalion, Royal Irish Rifles on 4 October 1915. He died on 1 July 1916, on the first day of the Battle of the Somme, at the age of 19 and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, France.</image:caption>

      <image:title>12R. Samuel McKnight - Samuel McKnight</image:title>
<image:caption>(*Probable Identification) Samuel was born in 1894, one of at least 17 children born to Samuel McKnight and Frances Spence, in North Belfast. He had emigrated to Australia, and lived at Miller's Point, Sydney. He enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force at Victoria Barracks, New South Wales in 1917. Samuel was previously employed at Harland and Wolff Shipyard in Belfast, and he was employed as a rigger in Sydney prior to his enlistment. He was aged 22 years, and gives his next of kin as his father Samuel McKnight, back home in Rowan Street, Belfast. He was sent to Eygpt in May 1917, entering the training camp for the 1st Light Horse Regiment in Moascar, Eygpt in June. He appears to have been constantly ill throughout his time in Eygpt, seeing the doctor on numerous occasions for fever and diarrhea. He spent many days in hospital with infected lymph nodes, sceptic sores and inflamed tissues. He was treated for Malaria in August of 1918, but his condition seems to have worsened, as on 25 November, he was admitted to hospital, where the malaria kept him for a few months. He returned to Australia in April of 1919 and was discharged in July. Samuel was one of five brothers who were serving during the war. The only one we have identified for certain is Henry McKnight.</image:caption>

<image:title>12L. John Wright - John was born in 1896 in Jennymount Terrace, but grew up nearby in Seaview Street.</image:title>
<image:caption>His father was William Wright, a gateman at the local flax spinning mill. His mother was Margaret Johnston, who gave birth to 8 children, but by the time of the 1911 census, only 4 remained alive. John would be her fifth child to die. John very thoughtfully signed his photo. The partial signature on the lantern slide helped enormously in his identification! John served with the 1st Battalion, Northumberland Fusiliers. He died on 10 April 1918, aged 22. His body was not recovered and is remembered on the Ploegsteert Memorial to the Missing in Belgium.</image:caption>

      <image:title>52. Joseph Kennedy - Joseph Kennedy</image:title>
<image:caption>Joseph, known as Joe, was 30 years old when he left his wife Margaret and three children, John (Jack), Norah and Edna to join up when war broke out in September 1914. He served throughout the war as a driver (horses) in the Army Service Corps and rose to the rank of Sergeant by the war’s end. His unit acted as the Divisional Train for the 36th Ulster Division. The horse shown on the slide is a draught animal and this is consistent with Joe serving in the Army Service Corps. The Corps was a natural choice for Joe as for most of his early life he had worked with horses delivering bread and milk, before ending up as a horse drawn tram driver. By the time the 1911 census had come round, the trams he was driving had lost their horses and were electric motor driven.</image:caption>

      <image:title>52. Joseph Kennedy - A Family Man.</image:title>
<image:caption>Joe was the second eldest son of Joseph Kennedy and Jenny Whan. The 1901 census shows him living aged 16 with his recently widowed mother Jenny, four sisters Margaret, Isabella, Elizabeth and Sarah; his two brothers Robert James and John George; Margaret’s husband Thomas McKee and his nephew Joseph at 73 York Road. His elder brother William had left home by this time. In April 1904 Joe married Margaret (Maggie) Steel who lived a few doors up from him, and by 1911 they were living at St Vincent Street along with their three children. When Joe joined the army in 1914, his son John was 9 years old, Norah was 7 years old and Edna was 2 years old.</image:caption>

      <image:title>4L. George Bruce - George Bruce</image:title>
<image:caption>George was one of eight children born to Richard Bruce and Mary Ann McKibben. He enlisted as a Boy (2nd class) in the Royal Navy at the age of 18 in 1901. He finished his time in September 1913 as an Able Seaman and joined the Reserves. As a reservist, he was called up immediately when war broke out 10 months later. George served on the monitor HMS Severn and was present at the Battle of the Yser in 1914, off the coast of Belgium, where the ship bombarded German troops as well as artillery positions. In October 1914, George survived an attack by the submarine U-8 when a torpedo passed under the ship. In July 1915, the monitor was towed to German East Africa where she assisted in the destruction of the German light cruiser Königsberg. George continued to serve on the East Africa station until the end of 1917. He then spent some time on a shore establishment and a final few months at sea aboard HMS Vigorous before being demobilised in March 1919. He wasted no time in marrying Margaret Jane Hillis in Castleton Church just a few weeks later, in June 1919. The couple had 3 sons, George (born 1923), Robert and James. His best friend Robert Bremner had married Margaret's sister Elizabeth Hillis in 1918. George Bruce died at the age of 83. George was identified by his eldest son George who recognised him straight away on seeing his photo. Thank you to Tom Gallagher, nephew of his brother James for helping with the identification.</image:caption>

      <image:title>8. Gerald Garfield Doak - Unsung Heroes</image:title>
<image:caption>In 1918, the Army Service Corps received the "Royal" prefix for its service in the First World War, becoming the Royal Army Service Corps. The Army Service Corps were the unsung heroes of the British Army. Soldiers could not fight without food, equipment and ammunition and during the war, the vast majority of this tonnage, supplying a vast army on many fronts, was supplied from Britain. Using horsed and motor vehicles, railways and waterways, the Army Service Corps performed great feats of logistics and were one of the great strengths of organisation by which the war was won.</image:caption>

<image:title>77L. John Duff - What happened when a man was wounded?</image:title>
<image:caption>Around 3pm on 23 June 1916 Duff’s company relieved the 1st Hampshire Regiment in the firing line. During the bombardment, he was wounded by shrapnel in his left wrist and back. He was first sent to the dressing station at Louvancourt, and 16 hours later was on a hospital train. Three days later, he arrived at Le Havre. The next morning he was on hospital ship SS Panama, sailing for almost 12 hours before arriving in Southampton. He then boarded a train reaching Cambridge Hospital 3 hours later, where he spent a couple of nights. He left Cambridge hospital by train via Waterloo and Victoria Stations to Eastbourne Convalescent Camp, a journey taking 8 hours. He spent 3 weeks at the Convalescent Camp before leaving to take ten days of sick leave. He rejoined his battalion at Derry on 10 August 1917, less than 6 weeks after he was injured.</image:caption>

<image:caption>William was born in Belfast to his Liverpudlian father James, and mother Margaret Jane Flynn from Magheragall in Lisburn. The couple had 8 children, but James was widowed in 1900 when his wife died. In 1901, the 8 siblings are listed as living with their 85 year old grandmother and uncle in Duncairn Gardens. The eldest sibling Margaret is listed as head of family. James found a new wife Sara McCullough who he married in 1902 and William had a new stepmother. William also found a wife, marrying Margaret in 1908, and the couple ca be found living in Dublin in 1911. This may be why some records list him as a Dublin born casualty of the war. However, his birth certificate shows that he was born in Dock Street, Belfast in 1881. By the time war broke out, the couple were living in Seaview Street, Belfast. William enlisted in the Royal Engineers, and he was 38 years old, when he was killed in action on 14 July 1917. He is remembered at Ypres Town Cemetery.</image:caption>
