Alexander Robert Hogg

Alexander R. Hogg was a professional photographer in Belfast until his death in 1939. Hogg established a body of work which represents a unique record of many working class areas in the city, including the years before the First World War when social services were provided officially for the first time.

In 1911 Belfast Corporation embarked on a major redevelopment programme to improve the city’s housing, and Hogg recorded the houses and streets before they disappeared.

The Ulster Museum holds the A. R. Hogg Photographic Collection which comprises glass plate negatives, lantern slides and prints. The collection relates to a wide range of subject areas typical of a successful local photographer of the early 20th century. The Castleton Lantern slides have been donated to the Ulster Museum for safe keeping, and they can be viewed by appointment.
