Wilson Gray Duke

Wilson Gray Duke was born in 1891 in Richhill, County Armagh to James Henry Duke, a harbour constable in Belfast, and his wife Matilda. His mother died of pulmonary tuberculosis before he was three years old, and he moved in with his Uncle George and Aunt Marion.

Eventually he moved to Belfast and in 1911 he is found living with his Uncle James and Aunt Florence and their 5 young children in Glasgow Street. His occupation was listed as a general labourer.

Wilson joined the 14th Battalion of the Royal Irish Rifles in 1915, and survived the war, although he was wounded.

Wilson, now a way master, married Margaret Jane Wilson in Cliftonville Presbyterian Church on 10th November 1920.

Wilson is not listed on the Castleton Roll of Honour. The minutes of the committee state that four men were not listed on the Roll because ‘no further information was forthcoming’. These men were: Wilson Gray Duke, WJ Beattie, J McFall and JK Hunter. Wilson Gray Duke is the only one of these men to date who has been confirmed as being in the slides.
