Ernest E. Ronald

Hutchinson

Killed In Action 26 Sept 1915

Known as Ronald, this Castleton man served with the 12th Battalion, Highland Light Infantry. His four brothers were also serving, three in the Army and one in the Australian Navy. Ronald was born in Watford, Hertfordshire and worked as a plater at Workman Clark Shipbuilders. He married Jessie Bremner, who lived 2 doors away, in Castleton Prebyterian Church on Christmas Day 1912.

Their witnesses were Jessie's Brother Robert Bremner (also on the Castleton Roll of Honour) and Robert’s girlfriend Elizabeth Hillis. Jessie and Ronald had two children, Alexander and William.

When Ronald died on 26th Sept 1915 at the Battle of Loos, Alexander was only 2 years old and William a baby of 11 months.

Ronald is remembered on the Loos Memorial, France. He was identified in the Castleton Lanterns slides because his picture was in the newspaper when he died.
