William Fraser

 

Killed In Action 29 September 1915

We believe this image is most likely that of 2nd Lieutenant William Fraser of the Royal Highlanders (Black Watch).

He was photographed in his distinctive Black Watch uniform along with John Houston.

Born in St. Andrew's, Scotland, William was the son of Ewen Fraser and his wife Christina Grant.

They lived at Carmel Street at the time of the 1901 census, at Melrose Street in 1911 and at 'Bunloit' on the Deerpark Road at the time of William's death.

William was an only child.

William was a Lance Corporal in the 6th battalion Black Watch (Territorials). In July 1915, he earned a commission for gallantry for retreiving the bodies of 2 of his friends from Belfast, Walter Newel and James Denning Willis.

William died on 29th Sept 1915, aged 23 and is buried at Lapugnoy Military Cemetery, France.

Lance Corporal 1765 Walter Newel, 6th Battalion Black Watch, died 10 July 1915, aged 26, buried in the Rue David Military cemetery Fleurbaix, France.  Commemorated along with his 2 brothers on the Newel memorial in Belfast City Cemetery. Son of Henry A Newel, master clothier of 362 Antrim Rd, Belfast .

Lance Corporal 2551 James Denning Willis, 6th Battalion Black Watch, died 10 July 1915, aged 24, buried in the Rue David Military cemetery Fleurbaix, France. Son of F William & Margaret Willis of 23 Dublin Road, Belfast. Father a master plumber & heating engineer.
