Alexandra Presbyterian Church

The community at Alexandra is made up of two congregations, that of York Street Presbyterian and Castleton Presbyterian. York Street Presbyterian Church was opened in 1839 and had a succession of ministers, including the Rev Thomas Hamilton, who became the first Vice Chancellor of Queen’s University and a member of the Privy Council of Ireland. This church’s history ended in it’s original location when it was destroyed in the Luftwaffe Blitz on Belfast in 1941. It was agreed that the congregations of York Street and Castleton should be united, to meet in the Castleton Building, the tower of which was also damaged during the war, and so Alexandra Presbyterian was born.
