Henry McKnight was a son of Samuel McKnight and Frances Spence who were married in Newington Parish Church in 1889. The couple went on to have a large family - by 1911 Frances had given birth to 16 children, though only 11 were still alive. She gave birth to child number 17 in 1913.
Henry served with the 15th (North Belfast) Battalion, Royal Irish Rifles, later with the Machine Gun Corps. He was awarded the Military Medal for bravery in the field in 1916.
We know that of the six McKnights on the Castleton Roll of Honour, five of them were brothers Henry, Samuel, Thomas, James and John. We believe that all of them survived the war. We are certain that we have identified Henry in the slides and we have made a tentative identification of Samuel.
