His father was William Wright, a gateman at the local flax spinning mill. His mother was Margaret Johnston, who gave birth to 8 children, but by the time of the 1911 census, only 4 remained alive. John would be her fifth child to die.
John very thoughtfully signed his photo. The partial signature on the lantern slide helped enormously in his identification!
John served with the 1st Battalion, Northumberland Fusiliers. He died on 10 April 1918, aged 22. His body was not recovered and is remembered on the Ploegsteert Memorial to the Missing in Belgium.
