Samuel Herbert
MehaffyTrimble
Enlisted At Fifteen.
This photo is very likely that of Samuel Herbert Mehaffy Trimble*. He was one of three Trimble brothers who served in the war.
Following in the footsteps of his elder brother Jack, Samuel lied about his age, making himself three years older in order to enlist in the Royal Air Force in 1918. Samuel was born on 13 January 1903, but gave his date of birth as 13 January 1900. He also used his middle name of Herbert on enlistment rather than Samuel. Samuel served almost three years in the Air Force, leaving when he was eighteen - finally old enough to join!
The slide includes three men - the middle one we know is Jack. One of the other brothers is in army uniform - This must be Alexander who was in the Royal Irish Rifles. Therefore we are assuming that the man pictured here, not in uniform, is Royal Air Force man Samuel.
