John Houston
Lance Corporal, Royal Highlanders (Black Watch).
John was born on the 16 July 1900, the fourth of nine children born to Joseph Alexander Houston, a painter, and his wife Margaret Hill.
The family lived at various addresses around the North Belfast area from Cosgrave Street to Fortview Terrace, moving as their family grew larger.
The children were Robert born in 1894, Anna in 1896, Catherine in 1898, our Castleton Lantern man John in 1900, Margaret in 1902, William in 1904, Alexander in 1906, Eliza Jane in 1908 and the baby of the family, Harriett Agnes in 1910.
John was wounded in December 1916, serving with the Black Watch. His photo appeared in the local newspaper, which enabled his identification in the lantern slides.
